Jon B. Zimmerman, as one of the managing senior partners and trial attorneys of Robinson & Wood, Inc., has an established practice as a counselor to clients in Silicon Valley and throughout the state. For over 25 years his practice has included the handling of litigation and transactions involving commercial, employment, real estate, construction defect and personal injury issues. In commercial real estate and construction litigation his primary practice is the representation of major developers and general contractors, and includes representation of self-insured businesses and commercial entities. During his practice, Mr. Zimmerman has tried many cases in State and Federal Courts and has argued before the California Supreme Court and California Court of Appeal.
As a trial attorney, Mr. Zimmerman has successfully negotiated settlements on behalf of his clients, and in those cases where settlement has not been achievable, has favorably represented his clients at trial. Recently, following a mid-2008 jury trial in the Santa Clara Superior Court, Mr. Zimmerman became one of the first California attorneys to recover a substantial defense indemnification for his client under the landmark 2008 California Supreme Court case Crawford v. Weather Shield Mfg. Inc. In the California Supreme Court case LeFrancois v. Duet Technologies, Inc. et al., (2005) 35 Cal.4th 1094, he successfully argued on behalf of his employment clients that the common practice of renewed motions in the Superior Court, including motions for summary judgment, should be firmly rejected as the public policy of the state, ending a practice which resulted in significantly higher fees and costs to many litigants.
Mr. Zimmerman is a member of the California State Bar and the Santa Clara County Bar Association, and admitted to practice in the United States Federal District Court for the Northern and Eastern Districts of California. He volunteers in the Santa Clara County Superior Court and lecturers on law and civil trial practice before the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and the Defense Research Institute. Mr. Zimmerman is also a member and past Director of the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and a member of the Defense Research Institute.
Mr. Zimmerman grew up in Menlo Park, California and graduated from Woodside High School. Following in the footsteps of his father and brother, he attended the University of California at Berkeley and in 1980 received two Bachelor of Arts degrees (History and Political Science) with Honors and Distinction in General Scholarship. In 1983 he graduated cum laude from the University of Santa Clara School of Law and was admitted to the California practice of law the same year. Mr. Zimmerman joined Robinson and Wood, Inc. in San Jose immediately after Law School and was made a partner in 1989. He is married with three children.
